The Palatinate Orchestra
JOIN ONE OF THE BEST ENSEMBLES DURHAM HAS TO OFFER.
Disclaimer: Due to Covid-19, unfortunately we are unable to hold in person auditions this year. Instead we are asking you to record a video of a piece or extract from your repertoire up to 5 mins long.
You will also be required to record an orchestral extract chosen by us, to replace sightreading, which will be released on our socials alongside a form on the 25th September.
You will need to submit both videos and a Google Form by 2nd October.
Durham University Palatinate Orchestra normally hold their annual auditions for both the Symphony and Chamber Orchestras during Freshers' Week. However, we have had to review our audition process in light of Covid-19 pandemic. For more information and to see important announcements, watch this space and follow us on our social medias.
However, for auditions in previous years we would ask that you prepare a short unaccompanied solo piece of your choice which lasts no longer than 5 minutes. This piece should demonstrate your technical and musical ability as much as possible. You will also be given 10 minutes before the audition time to prepare the sight-reading. This will consist of an extract (2 at most) of orchestral music to the standard of DUPO’s repertoire. To end the audition, there will be a Question and Answer session for DUPO so that we can get to know you better, where you will also have a chance to ask us questions. The auditions are really not something to be worried about- we try to make them as relaxed as possible!
Throughout the year DUPO tackles a wide range of challenging music, therefore it is advised that you should be around Grade 8 standard at least (whether or not you have taken the exam). However, this is not mandatory and we welcome and encourage all players who have a lot of enthusiasm for making music! Orchestral experience is not a necessity, but it can really help.
For those auditioning on two or more instruments you will need to book an audition slot per instrument and each audition is viewed independently. However, for woodwind, brass and percussionists who play auxiliary instruments, such as the oboe and cor anglais, or flute and piccolo, please bring them to your audition.
Should you be successful, we will contact you within a week of your audition. The annual membership fee for DUPO is £20.
