The Palatinate Orchestra
DEDICATED TO CREATING EXCITING MUSIC.
Durham University Palatinate Orchestra is one of the university’s leading orchestral societies, consisting of both a Symphony Orchestra and a Chamber Orchestra. We play a range of challenging repertoire, and, as an entirely student run society founded in 2008, we pride ourselves on our democratic, accessible and sociable nature. Throughout the year, members will have the opportunity of performing in termly concerts for both orchestras in impressive venues throughout Durham, including Castle Great Hall, Durham Town Hall and Durham Cathedral.
Members are also offered many other brilliant opportunities such as taking part in orchestral masterclasses led by World-Class professionals, as well as being welcomed to audition for concerti with both of our orchestras. DUPO also engages in an array of outreach projects, including our annual interactive educational concert for more than 400 local Primary School children, as well as running masterclasses with students at the Jersey Academy of Music and even playing for the Durham Christmas Lights switch-on.
In addition to social events held throughout the year, DUPO embarks on a European Tour during the Summer term. In previous years, DUPO has performed in a variety of impressive venues in Lyon, Prague, Jersey, Belgium (Brussels, Bruges and Ghent), Germany (Dusseldorf and Cologne), France (Paris and Lyon) and the Netherlands (Amsterdam and Delft).
In recent concerts, DUPO Symphony Orchestra have performed such exciting repertoire as Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, Bruckner's Symphony No. 4 and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition (a concert done in collaboration with the children of St Margaret's Primary School). The Chamber Orchestra has also played a variety of exciting repertoire, with notable piece including Stravinsky's The Firebird, De Falla's Sombrero de Tres Picos and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Fifth Symphony.
